No
one could accuse Laura Bird of sitting idol since the release of her
debut CD Dreamwalker. Laura has continued to write, perform and record
her music while being an active contributor to her larger musical community.
In addition to serving on both the OCFF and ArtsCan Circle Board of
Directors, she co-founded the Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award; co-founded
the Headwaters Acoustic Music Society and recently retired as Artistic
Director of the Live! At the Opera House concert series in Orangeville.
During the eight years devoted to the work of ArtsCan Circle, Laura
shared her music with kids at risk, traveling to remote Aboriginal communities
of Northern Ontario and Labrador. For the last five years Laura has
toured southern Ontario during International Women's Week with her songstress
sisters 'The Pomelos'; A "Quintana" consisting of Tannis Slimmon, Katherine
Wheatley, Marianne Girard, Heather Katz and alternatively Eve Goldberg
and Chris MacLean.
Laura
began working with bluegrass/jazz multi-instrumentalist and award-winner
Emory Lester in 2005 producing an EP Demo of some new tunes and in 2006
her song 'Heavy Load' was included on the bluegrass compilation project
North To Ontario, that subsequently won Recording of The Year at the
Central Bluegrass Awards. As a pre-release to her upcoming CD, a 'bluegrass'
version of Laura's song 'Rosalita' was recently included on the 2008
North To Ontario compilation project which has already been enjoying
airplay on both sides of the border.
With
all of Laura's extra curricular commitments now fulfilled the fall of
2007 brought closure and completion, allowing her to focus a renewed
energy to her own music. In late October she and NTO producer Gene Gouthro
began recording a new full-length project at Athlone Studios in Everett
Ontario. Once again Laura has assembled a stellar core of musicians
and musical guests representing the innovative Fly By Night Orchestra.
Over the cold winter months Laura was joined by Emory Lester on mandolin,
Dave Clarke on guitar, Denis Rondeau on bass, drummer/percussionist
Charlie Cooley, Alyssa Wright on cello and Tannis Slimmon on harmony
vocals, along
with many original FBNO members including Mike Stevens on harmonica,
Jack Walker on dobro, Robert Reid on guitar Allison Lupton on flute
and Geoff Somers on violin.
The
result is 'The Water In Between', a beautiful collection of fourteen
original compositions, showcasing both maturity in her songwriting as
well as the warm intensity of Laura's rich sultry vocals. The CD will
be officially released Saturday November 15th, 2008 at the Orangeville
Opera House. This project will no doubt mark a new and very positive
direction in Bird's musical journey. CONCERT INFO
