Who is DAVID CELIA??
Like so many of his talented Canadian contemporaries,
he's a 'best kept secret' at home, collecting frequent flier miles like
Grandma does doilies.
This summer David has been
criss-crossing festival stages in Europe and Canada while recording
the follow up to "This Isn't Here", spending precious time with
his young family and repacking his well worn suitcase. Just
before his 13th tour of England, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium,
with a jaunt to NYC, David plays his 'roots rock with hints of folk
wrapped in a pop package' at Winterfolk in Toronto... and we couldn't
be more thrilled that he'll be stopping in Orangeville enroute! Accompanied
by award winning composer and lyricist Joan Besen on keyboards
and the 'one to watch' up n' comer Tim Jackson, this intimate
house concert will definitely be an evening you won't want to miss.
Career Highlights include being asked to play guitarist-sideman
at a rare performance by Ian & Sylvia Tyson and playing massive
festivals both in Canada and Europe and also supporting Elvis Costello,
Shawn Colvin, Fairport Convention. In June 2010, he'll be playing
at England's legendary festival in Glastonbury (this year's headliner
is U2).
About JOAN BESEN
After a varied career of performing and writing, which included seven
years as a member of Sylvia Tyson's band, Joan Besen became a
member of Prairie Oyster in 1982. Her unique keyboard playing
is a strong element in the band's distinctive and familiar sound, and
can also be heard on the recordings of many other national and international
artists. Songwriter Joan Besen is composer and lyricist of many of Prairie
Oyster's best-known songs, including "Did You Fall in Love with Me,"
"One Precious Love," "Will I Do 'Til the Real Thing Comes Along," and
many more. Over the years her songs have received the majority of the
awards that the Canadian music industry has to offer, and for her keyboard
playing she has received the CCMA Keyboard Player of the Year award
14 times. With the Oysters, she has received six Juno Awards
and multiple CCMA and RPM awards, along with five gold and two platinum
albums, and, in 2008, was inducted into The Canadian Country Music
Hall of Fame.
Joan Besen is a founding member of SAC, and has participated in teaching
workshops for this organization. She also succeeded Frank Davies as
chairperson of the SOCAN Song of the Year Committee for CARAS,
a position that she held for several years. In addition to playing and
writing music, Joan enjoys participating in activities in support of
Canadian music, and currently sits on the Boards of Directors of
SAC and The Canadian Songwriters' Hall of Fame.
About TIM JACKSON
Tim Jackson is an 18 year-old musician from beautiful Perth, Ontario,
who attributes his various talents to his undying love for music and
the loving community that surrounds him. As a toddler he could often
be found carrying his tape deck with some of his favourite tapes (and
some of his friends' tapes that were graciously donated when he was
less than willing to part with them). As he got older his love for music
flourished as he was introduced to an eclectic mix of sounds, especially
The Eagles, Chicago and Collective Soul, and would often sing along
to them at the top of his lungs. Tim's songwriting career began in high
school as he began to discover himself through philosophical speculation
and personal grief, which still play the largest part in his songs.
He would say that music is a means of self-expression for the deepest
of emotions, as well as a gateway to self-discovery, experimenting with
this most delicate of art forms to try to create a multi-genre blend
that is at once tasteful and evocative. Now the front man for local
band Freshly Squeezed, he got his start as the bass player for
the rock group Mostly Harmless which has played a variety of
gigs including the Ottawa Folk Festival. His diverse influences,
including Coldplay, Led Zeppelin, and Martyn Joseph, have shaped his
uniquely haunting acoustic sound.
Tim was recently chosen to participate and showcase in the Ontario
Council of Folk Festivals Youth Showcase mentorship program where
he was mentored by non other than the wonderfully talented David
Celia. The chemistry between these two performers was immediate
and palpable. The audience was held breathless til the last note of
the performance followed by a silent pause that erupted into a wild
and heartfelt standing ovation.. a 'wow' moment for all with
murmurs of "we'll be able to say we saw him when..."
